William McFarland Thornburg, M. D.

	Dr. William McFarland Thornburg, age 92, died Saturday, August 14, 2004, 10:23 p.m., en route to the Marshall Browning Hospital Emergency Room.
	Dr. Thornburg was born in East St. Louis, IL on September 7, 1911, the son of Carl Clifton and Viva Lillian (McFarland) Thornburg.  He served with the U. S. Army during World War II as a surgeon.  Dr. Thornburg received a Doctor of Medicine Degree from St. Louis University in 1938.
	Dr. Thornburg married Louise Eline Kurrus in Wentzville, MO, on February 6, 1939 and she preceded him in death.  In 1958 he married Nina Jewel Brown Wilson in California and she preceded him in death.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Du Quoin, formed the Du Quoin Medical Group with Dr. George H. Gutridge, served on the staff of Marshall Browning Hospital, Du Quoin, was a lifetime member of the Illinois Medical Society, the American Medical Association, a charter and lifetime member of the American Academy of Family Practice, a member of the Perry County Medical Society, the Masonic Order with a 32nd Degree in Scottish Rite, and the B. P. O. E.  He served on the school board for two terms.  In 1983 he received the Distinguished Citizens Award granted by the Du Quoin Business Association.  He was on the Board of Directors for the Du Quoin National Bank from 1973-1991.
	Survivors include five children:  Mary (Richard) Haines of Du Quoin, Linda Thornburg (Klaus-Uwe Panther) Hamburg, Germany, Andrew(Kelly Beck) Thornburg of Carbondale, Ronald(Melissa Wind) Wilson of Inglewood, CO, Bill (Lee Lay) Wilson of Sunfield, IL; a sister:  Isabelle Vogel of Belleville, IL; nine grandchildren:  Jeanie Haines, Robert (Katherine) Haines, Jennifer (Martin) Howell, William (Cinthia) Haines, Harrison Thornburg, Noah Thornburg, Greg (Karen) Wilson, Anna (Brad) Bauman, and Josh Wilson; eight great-grandchildren:  Liam Haines, Harry Gladney, Isabella Haines, Elijah Haines, Courtney Mason, Dane Mason, Tayler Wilson, and Kaylee Bauman; four nephews:  Jim (Donna) Mussulman of Belleville, Joe (Chris) Mussulman of Tucson, AZ, Tom (Marlene) Vogel of Westchester, PA, Bill (Joan) Vogel of Belleville.
	For the last 26 years, Georgia (Charles) Fleming worked for Dr. Thornburg as housekeeper, caregiver, and is a beloved family friend.
	He was preceded in death by his parents, spouses, two sisters:  Inez and Virginia, and son Robert.
	Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at 12:00 noon in the First Presbyterian Church, Du Quoin, with Reverend Lee Tyler officiating.  Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park, Du Quoin.
	Friends called at the First Presbyterian Church, Du Quoin, on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services.
	Memorials may be made to the Marshall Browning Hospital Capitol Campaign.
